Force torque sensor in the spotlight of many industrial fields
The force torque sensor is a technology-intensive component that detects force and torque properties in the action force between the robot and the object. Force torque sensors that measure basic physical properties have recently been in the spotlight in various applications such as collaborative robots, automation systems, medical devices, drones, and measuring devices.
Robotous Force Torque Sensor, disruptively innovative
The existing resistance type force torque sensors have a complex manufacturing process and high price range, therefore have limitations in wide applications. A newly developed capacitance type sensors have a simple manufacturing process and hence can reduce the manufacturing cost significantly. However, it was difficult to have a relatively higher performance due to non-linearity in measuring signals.
Robotous began developing capacitance type force torque sensors since 2015 through intensive R&D, and succeeded in commercializing them for the first time in Korea after overcoming non-linearity, which is a vulnerable point of the capacitance type sensors. After self-developing an automatic robot device for calibration work, which is a crucial process in manufacturing sensors, Robotous was able to make name for itself. The strategic partnership for application development, and continuous R&D and field tests with a large domestic company, “S”, became a great help in laying the foundation for full-fledged business momentum by improving the performance of sensors and securing product lineups.
Robotous has been working with Korea’s largest collaborative robot manufacturer, “D”, for supplying customized sensors since 2019. The collaboration allowed for upgrading sensor performance including durability and environmental resistance, and paved the way to establish a quality manufacturing capacity of up to 300 units per month. Moon Hong-Yeon, CEO of Robotous, said, "We supply our products through cooperation with the product technology division of domestic major companies and most cobot manufacturers. We aim to go beyond our current state of being No.1 in the Korean market share, to become No.1 in the global market share within 3 years. We have already been supplying our products amid favorable reviews for their high cost-effectiveness to leading global companies such as the lowest price cobot manufacturer (China), large logistics automation solution system (US), large medical device provider (Netherlands), industrial drones for inspection manufacturer (Canada).” Moon presented a basis for his confidence in targeting overseas markets.
Robot technology company that has accumulated element technology and application technology for over 20 years
CEO Moon, who ran Robotous for over 20 years under the motto of “Advanced Technology for Human” said “At the time of its foundation, the business goal was to grow into a robot company recognized in the domestic and foreign markets as a robot component business suitable for small and medium-sized companies. Although it took a long time for national research institutes and customer companies to carry out numerous projects requiring a high level of robot technology, such as a mobile robot platform, remote control controllers, robots for hazardous works, facade cleaning robots, and underwater drones, all of it was meaningful to become a veteran robot technology company.
Leaping up to global No.1 force torque sensor company
CEO Moon made his business strategies public by saying “For SMEs with weak human and material resources, a strategy to target niche markets by constantly developing new products and business models is needed. Recognizing the importance of the global market and globalizing product technologies through collaboration with leading global companies rather than simply relying on product exports”
From the second half of 2021, marketing activities such as discovering distribution channels to expand sales in overseas markets, mainly in the U.S. and Chinese markets, and discovering mid to long-term collaboration partners from startups with the latest technologies to global leaders.
CEO Moon said, "As robots are applied to various fields of manufacturing, logistics, and services, not only large domestic companies but also overseas global companies are rushing into the robot business. In the global robot market, which is expected to grow rapidly to about 5 billion in 2024, Robotus has taken the opportunity to become a global small giant company based on market-disruptive innovative product technology and will prove it with tangible results," he expressed confidence.
As for the current force torque sensor, he suggested as a leader in the product technology that cooperation between related companies and government agencies is needed to standardize the force torque sensor, establish test standards, and certification system because lack of standardization can result in hindrance to the market growth.
Growth accelerated as a robot technology company by promoting new business projects
Currently, Robotous is pushing for a new business in the robot finished product sector based on robot technology and development experience accumulated for 20 years, and it is interpreted as a stepping stone to accelerate its growth as a global robot technology company. CEO Moon said, "After the implementation of the Act on the Punishment of Severe Disasters, robot technology is the most likely solution to minimize human casualties under dangerous working environments. We are considering developing robot automation solutions in high-pressure power distribution and steel manufacturing processes, judging that the combination of force torque sensor technology, remote control technology, and special robot arm design technology can promote the technology competitive robot business." In addition, he hinted, "We are planning smart fitness robot products in the form of B2C products by utilizing the competitiveness of force torque sensor-based data solutions, and we will push for a step-by-step launch from stand-alone products to cloud-based coaching services."
