Marine Electronics, a Korean maritime navigational equipment manufacturer, the development of its technology The history of creating ECDIS from Marine Electronics
Jun 15, 2020, 10:03
Founded in 1985, Marine Electronics was a Korean company that imports and supplies GPS even in the early days. That was because there was no own technology and the profits were quite large. However, with the growth trend of the Korean shipbuilding industry, Marine Electronics has been focusing on research to localize technology since the mid-1990s. Marine Electronics newly launched with CEO, and registered a patent for the 3D electronic navigation display method in July 1999.
Marine Electronics attempts to go to overseas with its technology and products. The first gateway was obtaining overseas standard certification. Afterwards, Marine Electronics obtained MED certification through the Overseas Certification Support Project. After obtaining EU-MED certification, the growth trend of Marine Electronics has changed significantly. The number of ECDIS sold by the existing company that had been monopolizing the ship market in the past is 25, while the number of sales by Marine Electronics is 140. This is clear evidence that the ECDIS of Marine Electronics was certified with the technology after obtaining the EU-MED certification. It also began interacting with large shipping companies.
Marine Electronics aims to strengthen its ECDIS exports by securing bases in China, Japan, and Greece as soon as possible. It has already had meetings with Chinese buyers, and is in preparation for joining a partnership with some company to help the Japanese market.
In addition to expanding exports, Marine Electronics is also focusing on training to cultivate the next generation of sailors. Unlike before, the sailor market has become smaller. There have been fewer people trying to get on a boat in Korea or China. Inevitably, it was a situation where foreigners were on board. Young people from Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Myanmar, and Indonesia are mostly mercenary sailors. However, it is impossible to receive systematic seafaring training in individual countries, and the work of foreign sailors on board ships without any knowledge is extremely limited.
In order to overcome this reality, Marine Electronics planned to use the educational simulator developed by Marine Electronics to promote the education donation project. Until now, the simulators have been supplied only to related organizations to help education. The goal is to set up a training center and proceed with the program. Of course, it will be a long time to go through the process. However, if preparations are made for the future from now on, various positive effects such as widening of the sailor market will occur. It is expected that the Marine Electronics will take into consideration not only the growth of the company but also the future of the navigation market.
