GL Chem contributes to Korea's technological independence by developing binders for secondary battery Formation of shield in the second Japanese export control situation
Apr 08, 2021, 11:12
On July 4, 2019, the Japanese government unilaterally informed Korea of export restrictions on three items essential for the production of semiconductors and displays. At that time, there were many analyzes that Korea was properly stabbed in a vital spot because those were essential materials for semiconductor production and its high dependence on imports.
Accordingly, the government came up with policies to strengthen competitiveness of materials, components, and equipment. Now, about a year and a half after Japan's export restrictions, the government's efforts are slowly paying off.
First of all, the Ministry of Industry diagnosed that "the supply and demand conditions for the three export-regulated items such as hydrogen fluoride, photoresist for extreme ultraviolet (EUV), and polyimide fluoride have been stably maintained due to the expansion of the factory size and diversification of import channels."
In this situation, GL Chem developed binders for secondary battery based on the government's support to increase Korea's competitiveness in the field of research and development (R&D) for core items. And it allows to lay the foundation for responding to sudden export restrictions such as Japan's export restrictions.
The binder for secondary battery developed by GL Chem is used to manufacture secondary battery separators and anodes, and is a device that serves as a bond to attach metals used in the separator and anode. GL Chem decided to cooperate with ETRI to supply binders to domestic battery companies and expand their global market share.
Meanwhile, GL Chem, founded in 2004, specializes in manufacturing IT materials, food additives, and pharmaceutical ingredients, and its headquarters is located in Daejeon. Other products produced by GL Chem include eco-friendly antifoaming agents essential for various industries, food and water treatment processes, as well as silicone emulsifiers, which are functional high-tech materials added to daily necessities such as cosmetics and shampoos.
In addition, GL Chem is the only company in Korea that has obtained KFDA approval by manufacturing CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose), a natural material that is added to food and pharmaceutical processes to improve the stability and functionality of products, and is incomparable in the CMC field.
