Kim Hong-joong, who met at Kovery, was confident. Kovery produces a linear motor used in large-scale display manufacturing equipment, camera module equipment, OLED (Organic light emitting diode) production equipment, and smartphone production and inspection equipment. There are more than 40 types of motors produced by Kovery, depending on the application.
Mr. Kim, who developed Kovery linear motor, is referred to as Dr. Motor. He also has a doctorate degree. After majoring in electrical engineering in Korea, he went to Japan in 1991, and graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Tokyo City University. Later, after working in the R&D department for 13 years at Hitachi, Japan's largest electronics company, he returned to Korean and founded Kovery in 2010. Mr. Kim said, “While working at Hitachi, I wanted to compete with the global market with a motor, but no one moved to action. The name Kovery is also an abbreviation of 'Korea is very good'.
Mr. Kim attended “Tokyo Techno Frontier,” Japan's largest EXPO, and was the only Korean speaker in there. Last year, he was named as a speaker at the “Japan Electric Society Industrial Application Symposium”, in which companies such as Panasonic, Hitachi, and Japanese academics participate. Mr. Kim is also a member of Japan's ultra-precision machinery sector. Mr. Kim said, "The more products are recognized abroad, the more products will be exported naturally."
Kovery linear motor developed by Mr. Kim is designed toplace the magnet perpendicular to the floor. In this case, the magnetic attraction force and the frictional resistance are significantly reduced, compared to the conventional motors so the ultra-precision control is much easier. The motor can be operated precisely with little force, and it can be used stably for a long time by reducing wear of the product, he explained.
With this technology, Kovery began to export the linear motors back to Hitachi in 2016. Currently, 30% of motor production is exported to Japan. “It was possible because my people I met while studying in Japan are helping,” said Mr. Kim.
In December last year, Kovery relocated the headquarters to Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, and had the necessary space and facilities for R&D and production. Mr. Kim said, “The transfer to the head office is 2 rounds for worldwide market. ”
