“We made our products with health by using only pure sesame and perilla seeds produced in Gangwon-do.”
Seowondang (CEO : Kim Bong-Hyeon), which has been making sesame oil and perilla oil for seven years, located in Gangwon-do, is actively taking the lead in expanding local agricultural products through contract cultivation.
Seowondang, a Korean sesame oil manufacturer, began contract cultivation with 17 farmhouses and 37,000 square meters from 2017, noting that the nearby Hoengseong area has a large daily temperature difference and a lot of sunlight. The purchase price was also guaranteed to be high so that farmers could focus solely on producing high-quality sesame seeds. Perilla seeds are usually priced at 6,600~7,000 won per kilogram, but the average purchase price at Seowondang is around 7,900 won, which is more than 5% higher. Instead, Seowondang stubbornly adhered to the principle of returning all the sesame seeds from farmers who mixed even a little of imported sesame seeds. As a result of the belief that farmers also followed, the number of contract farms this year has increased to 30 in two years.
The CEO, who also has experience in perilla seed farming, said, “You can make the best oil only by using high-quality local agricultural products generously. Seowondang are focusing on producing differentiated products by equipping a low-temperature milking facility to avoid containing benzopyrene, a carcinogen.” In particular, the CEO explained that raw perilla oil was produced in a cold pressing method that does not apply heat to enhance the unique flavor of perilla.
Thanks to such quality control efforts, Seowondang was selected as a manufacturer certified for agricultural specialty products and 6th industry certification in Gangwon-do. Wonju Agricultural Technology Center's maternal baby gift set also includes Seowondang's raw perilla oil, which is receiving good responses.
Accordingly, Seowondang is returning some of the profits from product sales to the local community. In addition, funding is provided at the village level so that contracted farmers can purchase necessary items such as fertilizers and agricultural materials in a timely manner. It is also taking the lead in donating scholarships to foster local talent.
Seowondang recently entered into a supply contract with Shilla I-Park Duty Free by releasing stick-type sesame oil and fresh perilla oil products. The CEO said, "We want to continue to contribute to the development of farmers and local communities in the future."
