The CEO of True Friend, Hwang Cheol-seo, started to watch the Chinese market while introducing cosmetics and household goods to China. Although he suffered from the aftermath of THAAD in 2017, he planned to keep knocking on the door of opportunity because the market is so large. Mr. Hwang thought that the Chinese market should never be abandoned or withdrawn.
“Before THAAD, there was a premium of Korean origin, so the fact that it was made in Korea became a strong point, but after THAAD, that premium disappeared. You have to compete with quality thoroughly. Marketing seems to have become even more important.”
Mr. Hwang said that through the door-to-door business, he was able to grasp the tendency of domestic consumers. From the sale of household goods and vibrators to door-to-door sales and exports to China, all of his experience became a valuable asset to him.
“We learned a lot by interacting with 100 visiting salespeople. It was a time when we got to know domestic consumers as well. In particular, we learned that people and employees are precious. Consumers prefer products with good quality for the price. If the quality is good but the price is low, we think that the product is recognized, so when planning a product, we came to think of 'cost performance' as important. The peeling pad is also expected to gain popularity as a product with an excellent value for price.”
Mr. Hwang is also paying attention to the Vietnamese market, which is showing steady growth every year. He has visited Vietnam and held a meeting with local buyers before.
“We met with buyers and delivered samples of peeling pads. We received a response from them that they expect good results not only in Vietnam but also in Southeast Asian markets. Vietnam still has a premium for Korean products, so it would be a good idea to use this period as much as possible to establish a bridgehead in the Vietnamese market. There are many products of good quality among the products of SMEs. It is difficult to be known to consumers, but we want to take an opportunity to promote Korean beauty to China and Southeast Asia.”
