Sep 08, 2020, 04:32
Dermameal felt more like a research institute than a Korean cosmetic OEM and ODM manufacturer. Going to the building, there were a large space for production facilities. The CEO of Dermameal, Hong-sup Kim, said that the production equipment will run without break since we have the best facilities.” During the interview, The CEO looked like both a 20-year veteran businessman and a young entrepreneur who is challenging.
- Please introduce your company.
Dermameal specializes in producing, developing, and researching cosmetics. Currently, there are about 30 employees working here. The research staff consists of about 10 people including the research director, senior researcher, and quality control personnel. Dermameal is a compound word of Derma and Meal, which means 'Food for Skin'. It contains the meaning of supplying nutrition to the skin by developing high-performance cosmetics.
- What was the foundation reason and operating philosophy?
Previously, in the Namdong Industrial Complex, I ran a cosmetics manufacturing company called “Natuzen”. To make the raw material business more expandable, I transferred Natuzen to some company and founded Dermameal. I believe that good products come out when good ingredients are used. These days, there are many products that focus on external aspects such as bottles and subsidiary materials. Cosmetics are applied directly to the human body, so I think those that come from nature have the best affinity for the skin. One of the important points is how to use natural ingredients for the skin scientifically.
- What are the product features?
There are more than 100 types of products developed, including basic cosmetics, hair care, sun cream, and makeup products. The main product is a high-functional peptide product that uses protein ingredients. Attaching two or more amino acids are called Peptide, and if more than 50 are attached, they are called Growth Factor. Proteins in our human body go into the resting phase over time. The peptide reactivates proteins in the body that do not function properly. Representatively, Botox-like cream, which has the effect of smoothing out wrinkles, and stretch mark cream, which cares for the skin that has been stretched during pregnancy and childbirth, are popular. We are also producing and exporting mask sheet packs in collaboration with Kolon Life Sciences. We plan to add more sheet types and organize them into 7 types so that they can be used for each day of the week.
- Tell us about the production process.
The most important thing in cosmetics is raw materials. First, after selecting the ingredients that suit the characteristics of the product, we do a formulation experiment. In order to create the desired texture and formulation, you have to mix the ingredients. Afterwards, the R&D team selects scent, etc., and takes a test for consumers of the target audience. Upon completion of the test, a presentation is held with researchers and manufacturing personnel after investigating whether raw materials can be used overseas, including China. After the production, quality inspections related to physical properties, heavy metals, and fines are conducted, and if there is no problem, they are packed. It takes about 6 months to 1 year for a product to come out.
